Rock crystal is the purest and most transparent variety of quartz, composed of silicon dioxide free from impurities. It forms in hexagonal prismatic crystals with an exceptional vitreous lustre and a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. Tourmaline is a complex boron silicate with a highly variable chemical structure, allowing it to occur in almost every colour of the spectrum, with black (schorl) being the most common. It is characterised by its longitudinally striated prismatic crystals and its unique pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties.
