Iridescent chalcopyrite is notable for its fascinating multicoloured patina, which displays flashes of blue, purple, pink and gold against its base of copper and iron sulphide. This optical phenomenon occurs due to the surface oxidation of the mineral, which generates a thin film of oxides and other sulphides, transforming its original brass-yellow colour into a metallic rainbow of great decorative value.
