Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass of siliceous composition, formed by the ultra-rapid cooling of silica-rich lava, which prevents it from crystallising. It is notable for its vitreous lustre, its conchoidal fracture with extremely sharp edges, and its intense black or iridescent colour. With a hardness of 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, it is a key item in collecting and gem therapy due to its terrestrial origin and its great aesthetic value.
