Basalt is a mafic volcanic igneous rock, characterised by its dark colour and fine-grained texture resulting from the rapid cooling of lava. It is the most common rock in the Earth’s crust, forming the base of the ocean floor and large continental plateaus. Composed mainly of plagioclases and pyroxenes, it is notable for its high density, great mechanical strength and its tendency to form spectacular geometric columns as it solidifies.
