Xylopal, or petrified wood, is a fossil that forms from ancient tree trunks buried for millions of years under sediments. Over a process lasting 20 to 200 million years, water rich in silica (quartz) seeps into the wood, replacing the original organic matter.
This mineralization process preserves the external shape, texture, and internal structures of the wood, such as growth rings. Xylopal does not form its own crystals; instead, it takes on the exact shape of the original trunk. Its name, which comes from the Greek "xylon" (wood), refers to this transformation into stone.
