Lepidolite is a mica, belonging to the same mineral family as biotite. Its name comes from the Greek word "lepidos," meaning "scale" or "shell," a perfect description of its layered structure, which allows it to easily flake into thin sheets.
It forms in crystals with a monoclinic system and, from a chemical perspective, it is a silicate with a rather complex formula. It is found in granitic pegmatites, which are igneous rocks that form from slow-cooling magma.
