Apache Tears are a type of volcanic glass, a variety of obsidian, known for their unique appearance and cultural significance. These dark, translucent stones are usually black or dark brown in color and have a distinctive conchoidal fracture, meaning they break into curved, glass-like shapes. They are usually small, smooth, and rounded, resembling teardrops or small pebbles.
The name "Apache Tears" is associated with a Native American legend. According to legend, during a US cavalry raid against an Apache tribe in the 1871s, a group of Apache warriors preferred to ride horses off a cliff rather than be captured. Apache women who loved these warriors cried for their lost loved ones and their tears turned into dark, glassy stones now known as Apache Tears.
