Marmatite from the Lola Mine, in the mining enclave of Portman (Murcia), is a variety of sphalerite (zinc sulphide) that is particularly rich in iron, giving it its characteristic intense, opaque black colour with a metallic sheen. It usually occurs in well-formed crystals, often associated with siderite and pyrite, and is highly prized by collectors due to the purity of its faces and the historical significance of this deposit in the Sierra Minera de Cartagena-La Unión.
