Mercenaria Permagna are fossil clams buried in calcite crystals.
The age of it is from the end of Plioceno to begining Pleistoceno (1 - 1,5 milions of year). Probably it died because a cathatrophic event, as for instance, a sudden burial or water intoxication.
Approx. Size: 8 x 5 cm
Mercenaria permagna with calcite crystals is an extraordinary palaeontological phenomenon in which the shells of Pleistocene fossil bivalves have been colonised internally by honey-coloured calcite crystals. This process of permineralisation creates a unique contrast between the fossilised organic structure and the vitreous transparency of the crystals, making these specimens highly sought-after by collectors due to their rarity and geometric beauty. Originating mainly from sites in Florida (USA), these specimens are a key reference for understanding fossilisation by recrystallisation in sedimentary environments.
