Lycoptera is a small freshwater bony fish that inhabited the lakes of East Asia during the Lower Cretaceous period, approximately 130 million years ago, and is notable for being one of the most representative vertebrate fossils of the Jehol Formation. Its excellent state of preservation is due to volcanic eruptions that deposited fine ash on the lake beds, allowing its skeletons and fins to be engraved in great detail on shale plates. This specimen, considered a distant ancestor of today's bony fish, is a classic collector's item that offers a fascinating visual testimony to prehistoric life in a compact and aesthetic format.
