Ammonoids (Ammonoidea), commonly known as ammonites, are a subclass of extinct cephalopod molluscs that existed in the seas from the Devonian period (around 400 million years ago) to the end of the Cretaceous period (65.5 million years ago). Thanks to their rapid evolution and worldwide distribution, they are excellent guide fossils for dating rocks and have enabled the development of biozone sequences with great biostratigraphic precision.
