Agate is a variety of chalcedony characterised by its concentric bands of rhythmic colours, formed by the successive deposition of silica in cavities within volcanic rock. It is characterised by its microcrystalline structure, waxy lustre and great toughness, often featuring geodes or crystalline quartz centres. Due to its hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and its infinite variety of natural patterns, it is one of the most versatile and prized gemstones in collecting and jewellery.
