Amazonite is a gemstone with a vibrant blue-green color that belongs to the feldspar family. More specifically, it's a variety of the mineral microcline.
Chemically, amazonite is a silicate with a complex formula. Its crystal structure is triclinic, and while it can be found in amorphous forms, its crystals are usually prismatic and often show intergrown patterns.
The distinctive green color of amazonite, which can be reminiscent of tropical waters, is due to the presence of lead in its composition. Although it was once believed that the color came from copper, more recent studies have shown that lead is the element responsible for its unique hue.
