    Origin: Navajún (Spain)

Cubic pyrite crystals from the Ampliación a Victoria mine in Navajún, Spain.

These pyrite specimens belong to the cubic system and are catalogued in the sulphide group, with chemical formula FeS2. Pyrite is a very common mineral, found in a multitude of geological formations from sedimentary deposits to hydrothermal veins.

Pyrite was known as "fool's gold" because of its similarity to gold in ancient times.

Did you know that the Navajún mines stand out as the main producers of cubic pyrite, and that practically every self-respecting collection, as well as museums all over the world, have specimens of this magnificent mineral?

It is used as an iron ore and, as a collector's item, it is well known for the beautiful crystals that have been found around the world. Famous localities for their pyrites are: Elba in Italy, Huanuco in Peru, Ambasaguas and Navajun in Spain or Illinois in the USA.
