Beryl is a mineral that belongs to the silicate group and crystallises in the hexagonal system. It is characterised by its wide range of colours, which give it different specific names depending on its hue: for example, emerald (green) and aquamarine (greenish blue) are varieties of beryl.
Its name probably comes from the Greek term beryllos, which referred to bluish-green gemstones. This mineral is known for its hardness and transparency, which makes it valuable both in gemmology and industrial applications, as it is also an important source of beryllium, a light chemical element used in various high-tech alloys.
