Rock crystal is the purest and most transparent variety of hyaline quartz, formed from silicon dioxide crystallised in the trigonal system. It is characterised by its complete lack of colour, its vitreous lustre and its pointed hexagonal prismatic crystals, which originate in hydrothermal veins. Due to its hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and its crystalline transparency, it is an essential mineral both in gemological collecting and in industrial and decorative applications.
