Xylopale is wood that has been fossilised through a process of permineralisation, in which the original organic matter has been replaced by silica (quartz or chalcedony) over millions of years. It preserves with astonishing precision the cellular structure, growth rings and texture of the original tree, transforming them into a gem of great hardness (7 on the Mohs scale). It is a fascinating specimen for collectors and decorative purposes, blending palaeontology with mineralogy in pieces of timeless beauty.
