Its origen is debatable. Lingam would be a phallus symbol (it refers to the masculine energy). It is sometimes represented with ioni, a vulva symbol (it refers to the female energy). The combination of both represent the indivisible duality between masculine and female, two differents spaces when they are related pasive and active as origin of life.
